Tom Kuhne's son returns to heartwarming welcome

Tom Kuhne is a 1965 JHS grad. His son earned a Purple Heart. This is the story that ran in community media.

Good news in the form of yellow ribbons lined the streets of Maple Grove's Birchview Road. But it wasn't just the streets.

The trees, branches and light posts were all decked in yellow to welcome back Master Sgt. Jake Kuhne from Afghanistan.

"It's very heartwarming for me," said Jake's father, Tom. "A lot of the people on this street have known Jake since he was a baby, and so this was very, very special."

Jake enlisted in the Army Reserves in 1996. Since then, he has served in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.

"So he's spent a total of almost 16 years [in the service]," Tom Kuhne said. "He's had four combat deployments, been wounded once. Thankfully only once."

That injury occurred in 2005 when a roadside bomb exploded under his humvee. The incident earned Jake a Purple Heart.

Tom, however, said Jake's not big on seeking attention, which is part of the reason why he spoke Monday on Jake's behalf.

"For them it's a job," he said. "And so, no big deal. The reason I'm sitting here being interviewed is because I think it's a very big deal."

So did the people who live in the 10 homes along Birchview Road. Liz Quam organized the effort to line the streets with yellow ribbons for Jake's visit Sunday afternoon after returning home on Friday.

"I got a roll for each of the houses and I gave it to them and I gave them some poster board and the rest is history," she said.

It was a hero's welcome for someone who has repeatedly put himself in harm's way.

"He's my hero," Tom admitted.

The people who live along Birchview Road felt the same way, which is why they wanted to show their appreciation to congratulate Jake on a job well done.

"I think he was very appreciative of this and I think it sort of touched him," Tom said.

Karen Hepper Common, Class of 1967

Karen Elizabeth Hepper Common was born September 8, 1949, and died December 26, 2011. She was 62. She is survived by her three children, April, Mike and Lindsay; four grandchildren; sister, Jaci Bateman; nieces and nephews; as well as her longtime love, David Lario.
She was born in Fargo, North Dakota to Alex and Letietia Hepper. Karen graduated from Alexandria High School in 1967. She moved to Livermore, California in 1969, where she raised her family and worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory until she retired two years ago and moved to Oakdale, California.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents; brother, David and sister, Vicki. Arrangements were with Callaghan Mortuary in Livermore, California.

Mike Gillespie's father

James “Jimmer” Charles Gillispie, age 88, passed away at his home in Surprise, Arizona on December 4, 2011. He divided his time between Surprise and Big Sky, Montana.
Jim was born January 11, 1923 to Dr. James and Rose Gillispie in Falls City, Nebraska. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a medical corpsman attached to the Marines (Fleet Marine) in the Pacific.
On August 17, 1944, he married Collette Hatfield. They lived in Alexandria for 23 years. In May 1972, Jim heard about a new ski resort being created in Montana by newscaster Chet Huntley. Wanting to be a part of this new endeavor, Jim loaded his 1962 Chevy Impala with Bruno, his German shepherd, and headed west to what was to become Big Sky.
The following August, Collette followed with the family belongings in a U-Haul. When they first arrived, the resort was still under construction, making them some of the first settlers. Jim first worked at the Yellow Mule as a bartender in Meadow Village. When Jim asked Chet who was going to run the bars on the mountain, Chet said, “Speak up for yourself.” So, Jimmer’s Brass Bell and Caboose came to be a Big Sky tradition. An article in Ski Magazine referred to the spiral staircase from the Brass Bell down to the Caboose as “the steepest vertical descent in Big Sky.” Jim recalled a time when Chet Huntley decided to make the very first long-distance call on Big Sky’s new telephone. He wanted to call London and record the call to play back in his news broadcast. He dialed the operator and told her the number he wanted in London. The operator asked, “Who’s calling, please?” He answered, “This is Chet Huntley in Big Sky, Montana.” The operator said, “You’ve got to be kidding,” and hung up.
After nearly two decades of operating the Brass Bell and Caboose and the Black Otter at the Arnold Palmer Golf Course, Jim and Collette retired and traveled to New Zealand, Australia, Russia, Japan, England and Hawaii.
Jimmer was preceded in death by his wife, Collette. He is survived by his children, Janet Neils (husband, Roger) of Clear Lake, Mike Gillispie (wife, Tona) of Mankato, and Cindy Gillispie of Leander, Texas. Patty Collins' sister, Marie Baas

Marie June Baas, 62, died Friday, December 22, 2011, surrounded by her beloved family.

A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Alexandria on Saturday, January 7 with visitation from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and the service at 11 a.m.

Marie was born February 9, 1949 in Alexandria to Clyde and Mertyce (Cole) Collins. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1968.

She married Robert Baas on October 7, 1967. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliaries, Outreach Food Shelf, Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher and Vintage Car Club.

Her family was the most important thing in her life; being a grandma. She showered them with love, joy and praise. Her unconditional love extended beyond her family and she touched the lives of friends who couldn’t help but love her in return.

Marie enjoyed reading, baking, gardening and canning and enjoyed going for rides in their vintage cars to go for ice cream.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; children, Paula (Milo) Scott of Wadena, Timothy (Melissa) Baas of Carlos, and Michael (Amanda) Baas of Holmes City; grandchildren, Tyler and Kendra Scott, Jordon and Harliann Baas and Hunter Baas.

She is also survived by her brothers, Gary Williams and Dennis Collins; and sister, Patricia Owens.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Marie will be laid to rest at the Geneva Cemetery in Alexandria.

Peggy Watters' ex-husband, Ray Fiebranz

Raymond Arthur Fiebranz, 67, died peacefully at his home in Oak Grove on Thursday, December 22, 2011.

Raymond was born January 6, 1944 to Arthur and Margaret (Schulke) Fiebranz in Alexandria. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Carlos and graduated from Jefferson Senior High School.

Ray married Peggy (Watters) and they had five children, Kathern, Karen, Linda, William and Robert. The family farmed and pursued small business endeavors for several years. Although the marriage did not endure; he cared deeply for Peggy and they later became good friends.

Ray was a farmer in his heart and loved to help living things grow and flourish. Over the years he cared for his gardens and pets. In 1987 Ray moved to the metro and began working for Air Quality Engineering. He enjoyed working at the company for more than 20 years.

On Ray’s birthday in 2009 he was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with cancer. After a few months of care and treatments, he was given six months or less to live. At that point he chose to forgo any additional treatments and put his life and death in our Lord’s hands. Each holiday or special event that passed we gave thanks he was still with us. He was thankful for his second life in which he was blessed with three additional great-grandchildren and many family gatherings. He was especially thankful for the chance to make many special memories with us, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Although we will miss him daily, we know he is in a much better place. It was wonderful to watch him grow his spiritual life in preparation for his journey.

Ray is survived by his mother, Lorna Fiebranz of Alexandria; daughters, Kathern (Greg) Niblett of Alexandria, Linda (Chad) Fiebranz of Victor, ID; daughter-in-law, Pamela Fiebranz of Blaine; son, Robert (April) Fiebranz of Oak Grove; grandchildren, Steven (Michaela) Niblett of Carlos, Lauren (Phil) Kujawa of Alexandria, Madilyn, Isabella and Sofia Fiebranz of Oak Grove, Jenny (Chad) Lenow of Blaine; and great-grandchildren, Kaija, Easton and Grayer Niblett of Carlos, Logan Niblett and Gauge Kujawa of Alexandria and Jack and Wyatt Lewnau of Blaine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Margret; Peggy Nelson, infant daughter Karen and his son, William.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 6, 2012 at the Washburn-McReavy Glen Haven Funeral Chapel with Pastor Dale Swan officiating. Music will be provided by Becky Pansch. Memorials are preferred to Feed My Starving Children, 401 93rd Ave NW, Coon Rapids, MN 55433. Interment will be at Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria at a date to be determined. Honorary pallbearers are Ray’s children and grandchildren.

GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA - Richard H. Steinmetz passed away December 6, 2011 in Gainesville, Florida.

Born in Lincoln, Nebraska he grew up in Minnesota and graduated from the University of Nebraska. After service in the U.S. Army he pursued graduate studies in photography, his life long passion, earning a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Florida.

Until his retirement in 2010 he was a teacher at Gainesville High School and on the faculty at the University of Florida School of Architecture where he taught photography and digital imaging coursework and ran photography workshops at the Preservation Institute: Nantucket Summer Field School in Historic Preservation.

Survivors include his twin brother Robert H. Steinmetz and wife Mary, Overland Park, Kansas, sister Shayne Graves and husband Steve, Brooklyn Center, Minnesota and two nephews Todd & Casey Steinmetz of Lenexa, Kansas along with their families.

Memorial services will be held at 4:30 p.m. January 10, 2012 at United Church of Gainesville. 1624 NW 5th Ave, Gainesville, FL 32603. Donations in honor of Mr. Steinmetz may be made to: Doctors without Borders or Haven Hospice.

Eugene A. Widstrom, 91, died on Friday, October 21, 2011 at Knute Nelson in Alexandria. A memorial mass was held on Saturday, October 29 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria with Father Steve Binsfeld officiating. Visitation was held on Friday, October 28 at Anderson Funeral Home.
Entombment will be in St. Mary’s Mausoleum. Honorary Pallbearers are Lyn, Jeff, Jason, Scott, Katie, Nicole, Ryan, Brock, Kyle, Andy, Naomi, Thomas, Tabitha, Christopher, Luke, Allie, and Bailey.
Eugene Allen Widstrom was born on August 23, 1920 in Minneapolis, the son of Joseph and Mae (Storberg) Widstrom. He was raised in SE Minneapolis and graduated from Marshall High School in 1938.
Eugene joined the Civilian Conservation Corps where he built roads and charted lakes near Ely. Gene joined the United States Army during WWII. He was stationed in Europe and worked as a supply sergeant.
Gene was united in marriage to Jean Clare Floerkey on June 5, 1943 at Incarnation Catholic Church in Minneapolis. Together they had eight children: MaryClare, Ken, Paula, Beth, Denise, Stephen, Christopher, and Michele. Jean died in 1962.
On October 3, 1964 Gene was united in marriage to Dorothy (Dierkhising) Loeffler at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria. A son, Mark, was born to Gene and Dorothy in 1965. Gene worked for over 40 years as a hardware salesman for the George A. Clark and Son Company.
He then worked as a friendly “greeter” at Wal-Mart for almost 20 years. Gene was very active in St. Mary’s church and choir. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years and reached the 4th Degree in that organization. He also belonged to the American Legion and VFW. Gene always had a story to tell and enjoyed meeting with friends and playing cribbage and bridge.
He loved to play golf and was able to card two, hole-in-one shots on #13 at the Alexandria Golf Course. Gene spent much of his time woodworking and made jewelry boxes for his daughters and granddaughters.
Gene had a great sense of humor and a wonderful attitude toward life. Gene’s family always came first with him.
He is survived by children: Mark (Jennifer) Widstrom of Duluth, Michele Groves of Woodbury, Christopher (Sharon) Widstrom of St. Cloud, Denise (Rick) Barnaal of Kimberly, WI, Beth (Roger) Widstrom-Anderson of Maple Grove, Paula (Gary) Hanson of Champlin, Ken (Teresa) Widstrom of Coon Rapids, and MaryClare (Roger) Helgeson of Minneapolis; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Russ (Lee) Widstrom of Port Charlotte, FL; sister Joy Dvorak of Robbinsdale, MN; sister-in-law Lavonne Widstrom of Columbia Heights, MN.

Jeanie Affeldt Guenther's mom

Olga Affeldt, 84, died Thursday, September 29, 2011 at Diamond Willow in Alexandria.
Olga was born September 25, 1927 in Spruce Hill Township, the daughter of Gottlieb and Paulina (Gezell) Rieder. She was one of eight children.
Olga attended kindergarten in Fairmont and elementary schools in Parkers Prairie and Garfield. She graduated from Central High School in Alexandria in June of 1946. Olga’s first job was working at Travelers Inn Café as a waitress. She met her future husband Arthur Affeldt while working at Travelers. They fell in love and were united in marriage on September 1, 1946 in Garfield at St. John’s Lutheran Church parsonage.
The young couple bought their first home in Alexandria and began their new lives together. They were blessed with six children, Jeannie, Marlys, Wendy, Joseph, Mark and Rita.
After the kids were in school, Olga went back to work as a waitress at Bill’s Broadway Café. She then went to work at Arrowwood Hotel and Resort in 1970 and retired from there in 1983. Olga and Arthur built a home on Lake Jessie in 1974 to enjoy their retirement years. Together they enjoyed trips to casinos and long drives in the country to look for any signs of wildlife. She thoroughly enjoyed seeing a doe with her baby fawns or big bald eagles.
Olga took many trips during the winter months with Arthur to Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, where Art loved to fish and Olga loved the scenery. Olga liked to tend to her gardens and was always ready to play a game with whomever would be ready to challenge her. Her favorite game was Triple Yahtzee.
She loved her family and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Arthur Affeldt; daughters, Jeanie (Bill) Guenther of Spring Lake Park, Marlys Affeldt of Alexandria, Wendy Welle of Alexandria, Rita (Kim) Barros of Alexandria; son, Mark (Ann) Affeldt of Clearwater; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Emil Reider of Minneapolis; and sister, Marie Klicke of Howard Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Carol Johnson and Rose Olson; brothers, Carl Rieder and Arnold Rieder; Bill Gezell; infant son, Joseph Affeldt; and grandson, Thomas Barros.
A funeral service was held on Saturday, October 1 at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Interment was at Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria. Casket bearers were John Kluver, Chris Guenther, Mark Affeldt Jr., Levi Barros, Austin Kluver and Richard Hemmelgarn. Honorary casket bearers were Jacob Barros and Scot Guenther. Del Fladwood's sister, Kay Harder, 63

Kay “Sissy” Charlene Harder, 63, formerly of Burlington, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully at her residence in Minneapolis on September 30, 2011.
Kay was born September 2, 1948 in St. Paul to Roy and Jean Fladwood. She grew up in Alexandria, where she graduated from Jefferson High School and then later attended the University of Minnesota. She raised three sons, Jason (Karen) Motl of Winona, Travis (Rachel) Harder of Burlington, WI and Ian Harder, El Centro, CA at their house in Burlington, WI while working for the Standard Press as an assistant editor.
She later moved to the Minneapolis area to be closer to her sisters and worked at the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis. She loved watching movies, reading and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Jean; stepfather, Walter Anderson; infant sister, Connie Lee; brother, James; and nephew, Andrew.
Kay “Sissy” is survived by her brother, Delmer (Roxanne) Fladwood; sisters, Mary Jo (Mike) Baglio and Patti Lu Fladwood; her sons, Jason, Travis and Ian; and three beautiful grandchildren, Kayla, Abigail and Jack, who knew her as “Nonnie.”

Gary Ekdahl's mother

Evangeline “Angie” Marie (Berg) Ekdahl passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at Clearwater Suites in Alexandria at the age of 89.
Angie was born August 16, 1922 in Clearbrook, the daughter of John and Tillie Berg. She grew up in rural Minnesota and moved to the Alexandria area in 1937 and worked for a local family. She married Gordon Ekdahl on November 8, 1942 at Calvary Lutheran Church. After their marriage they lived on the family farm.
During World War II, Angie and some family members and friends supported the war effort by traveling by train to Seattle, WA to work at Boeing Aircraft, building B-29’s. Gordon remained on the farm supplying food for the armed forces.
Upon returning to Alexandria, she and Gordon purchased the family farm and started raising their family. While the farm was hard work, they prospered during difficult times.
In 1959, Angie and Gordon purchased lake shore property on Lake Ida and built up the Cozy Nook Resort. Gordon continued to cash crop the farm while Angie ran Cozy Nook. Angie was actively involved in the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce and Resorters’ Association. On several occasions she represented Alexandria at the Resorters’ Convention in Minneapolis.
Angie loved fishing. A highlight of running Cozy Nook was when they hosted the fishing opener for Gov. Harold LaVander. Angie organized a small army of local Lake Ida fishermen to scout the hot spots to make sure the governor wouldn’t go home empty handed. Angie spent many hours in her ice fishing house and enjoyed “out-fishing” everyone, and we mean everyone.
Angie and Gordon finally retired from farming, sold Cozy Nook and moved to a new home on Lake Ida. Angie enjoyed all types of crafts. She made countless quilts, blankets, and pieces of hardanger for all family members. At the age of 70, she started taking guitar lessons and created a CD of her favorite songs. She also enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities, which included a few trips to state volleyball and basketball tournaments.
Angie sold her home on Lake Ida and moved to Bethel Manor in 2004. While living there she planted and tended to hundreds of flowers around the building.
She is survived by her two sons and their children, Edward (Kathy) of New Germany, Gary (Nancy) of Alexandria; grandchildren, Chris Ekdahl, Corbin (Youa) Ekdahl, Marisa (Chris) Wessel, Sarah (Jeremy) Geris, Alisa (Aaron) Hvezda; four great-grandchildren, Carsten and Miah Wessel, Kegan Ekdahl, Jameson Geris; sister, Terry Roth; sister-in-law, Vangie Ekdahl; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon; parents; brothers, Maurice, Harvey and Earl Berg.
Funeral services were held Monday, September 12 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Burial was at Kinkead Cemetery.

Kathy Schultz Hagemeister's Mother

Lorraine Mary Dittberner Schultz was born on June 15, 1920, and went to be with her Savior on September 8, 2011.

An only child, Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Minnie Dittberner. She was baptized on July 11, 1920 and confirmed on July 1, 1934 at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Leaf Valley.

She attended country school at District 23 near Leaf Valley, and graduated from Alexandria High School in 1938.

Married to Otto C. Schultz on June 4, 1941 at Ebenezer, she farmed with her husband near Leaf Valley, where they raised their four children. In 1978 they retired and moved to Alexandria. In 2006 they moved to their current home at Windmill Ponds.

Lorraine and Otto celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in June 2011. As an active member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church, she sang in the choir, was in Ladies Aid and taught Sunday school. While a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria, she sang in the choir, played in the handbell choir, was a member of the quilting group and co-chaired many years on the funeral committee with her dear friend, Edna Anderson. She volunteered in the coffee shop at Knute Nelson for several years, was a charter member of the Leaf Valley Fire Department Ladies’ Auxiliary and part of the committee that started the annual potato pancake feed.

Lorraine was a wonderful cook. Her specialties included delicious homemade buns and rosettes. She loved playing the piano and was an avid gardener. She especially loved her flowers. She did many types of handiwork, including hand-stitching quilts for each of her 14 grandchildren’s graduations.

Lorraine and Otto enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, Germany, England and Wales. Over the years they enjoyed many road trips to Florida, California and many other states with Otto’s only brother Willmar and his wife Lillian. She loved playing cards, especially “Schultz 13” with Bernie and Armilda Follick, visiting with family and friends, days spent at Lake Miltona, and accompanying Otto during his Barbershop and Old Timers Quartet activities. She often played piano at home to help the Old Timers practice.

Her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Otto, of Alexandria; her children, Wayne (Lori), Watertown, SD, Tom (Barb), Garfield, Kathleen Hagemeister, St Cloud, Rodney (Lori), Alexandria; 14 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

A funeral service was held September 12 at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. William Moeller and the Rev. David Hinz officiating. Music was provided by Irma Brockberg and Dan Olson. Interment was at Ebenezer Cemetery in Leaf Valley. Steve Schultz, Lisa Schultz, Bill Schultz, Kim Londo, Josh Hagemeister and Angie Johnson served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Bonna McFarland, Carla Theusch, Kaylene Schultz, Leah Thul, Ross Hagemeister, Jed Hagemeister, Heather Good and Sheri Schultz.

The Douglas County Fair set an all-time record for attendance of 26,079 and for gate/parking proceeds of $13,868. There were 1,567 4-H entries. Donald Wilke won the grand champion all-breed award for his 2-year old Holstein heifer and the Minnesota Valley Breeders plaque for outstanding dairy achievement. Lenore Sletto of Moe 4-H received the coveted Thornton Trophy.

Brian's Berglund's brother, Mike

Michael Berglund

Michael Berglund, 66, of Scottsdale, Arizona passed away on August 23, 2011. He was born in Alexandria to Joe and Tibby Berglund.

After high school graduation, Mike joined the Navy and served in Vietnam in a naval air squadron. He then graduated from ASU with a chemistry degree and worked for Motorola and Teledyne (CA). Upon returning to Arizona, he entered the retail nursery business.

With his hard work and dedication, he built Desert Winds Nursery into successful businesses. Mike’s list of friends and colleagues grew through his involvement with Executives Association of Greater Phoenix. His other hobbies included golf, fishing and traveling.

Mike is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Angela; his daughter, Laura and grandson, Joshua; also, sister, Shelly Moore and husband, Lee Sr., and her children, Lee Moore Jr., Brianna Gallelli and husband Neil; brother, Brian Berglund and wife Rosemary and their sons, Jonas, Steve, Michael, Mark and Trey.

Mike touched many people’s lives with his courage, strength and generosity and love. He will be greatly missed by all those who have been blessed by knowing him.

A Celebration Service for Mike was held Monday, August 29 at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 5045 East Thomas Road, Phoenix. Burial followed at St. Frances Cemetery, 2033 North 48th Street, Phoenix. Elvera Brockopp, 85, Alexandria, passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2011.
Elvera was born November 9, 1925 in Parkers Prairie, the daughter of Walter and Beata Hink. She was baptized and confirmed at St. James Church in South Effington.
Elvera married Raymond Brockopp on July 24, 1946. They were blessed with two children, Jane and Merle. She enjoyed doing crafts, sewing, gardening and puzzles; but her greatest joy was her family and her involvement with the Zion Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday school for 15 years, was a member of the Zion Lutheran Altar Guild for more than 30 years and played cards with church Card Club.
Elvera did housework for various families until 1974. At that time, she became a fulltime employee for 14 years in the housekeeping area of Douglas County Hospital.
She is survived by her daughter, Jane (Clair) VanMaldeghem of Shakopee and son, Merle (Cheri) of Sartell; five grandchildren, Christy (Jay) Vierzba, Mitchell (Lisa) Wostrel, Andrea (Wayne) Houser, Alysia (Kevin) Clayton, Melinda (Derek) Tamm; and 11 great-grandchildren, Jack and Gage Vierzba, Noah and Grace Wostrel, Alexander, Justin, Dru and Breana Houser, Ainsley, Gabriel and Isabelle Clayton.
Funeral services were held Thursday, August 25 at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria with the Rev. David Hinz and the Rev. William Moeller officiating.
Her final place of rest will be at the Kinkead Cemetery next to Raymond, who passed away in 2003.

Margaret Louella (Buhman) Meyer, 91, died Monday, August 22, 2011.
Margaret was born October 13, 1919 to John and Minnie (Kuehl) Buhman on the family farm in Carlos. She went to school in Carlos and won a trip to the state fair to compete in the state spelling bee. She graduated from Alexandria High School and then completed the teacher’s training program. She taught grades 1-8 at District 69 before she married.
On June 13, 1942 Margaret was united in marriage to Herbert Meyer. The couple made their home in Alexandria where they were blessed with six children. Later Margaret returned to teaching and taught kindergarten at Zion Lutheran Church School. She later worked at Bethany Home until retiring.
Margaret was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church and participated in the Ladies Aid.
Margaret believed her greatest accomplishment in life was “raising five good kids.” She was a wonderful mom and grandmother, but also an avid reader, a pretty good card player, a great cook and baker, and a dedicated gardener. In her later years, after she had lost much of her sight and could no longer do, she was all about being – being humble, being thoughtful, gentle and kind, being compassionate and forgiving, being thankful. As a friend said, “She set a good example for all of us.”
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Meyer; son, Wayne Meyer; grandson, Paul Bird; daughter-in-law, Diane Meyer; and two sisters, Helen Beulke and Florence Doebber.
Margaret is survived by her three sons, Gary Meyer of Craig, CO, Dale Meyer of Centennial, CO, and Randy Meyer and wife, Joy, of North Mankato; two daughters, Karen Bird of Prior Lake, and DiAnn Stearns and husband, Rick, of Big Lake; grandchildren, Peter, Mike, Matt, Megan, Ryan and Brad; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Brandon; step-grandchildren, Eric, Gabe, John, Mandy, Kris and Jenny; and sister, Arlene Nack of Alexandria.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 27 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. William Moeller and the Rev. David Hinz will officiate. Mertice Brueske and Dan Olson will provide music. Interment will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Carlos. Casket bearers will include all of Margaret’s grandchildren. Memorials are preferred.

An offer accepted at Monday night’s District 206 School Board meeting may have some people smiling.

Jefferson High School is in the process of being sold.

After a closed session to discuss the merits of two offers, the board unanimously approved a purchase agreement for the JHS property from Brent and Sally Smith of Alexandria.

“I’m pleased to say that their offer is for $2 million and $100,000 in earnest money,” said Board Chair Dean Anderson.

The sale of JHS is the most recent hurdle the board is clearing in the process of putting a referendum before voters in the fall to build a new high school in Alexandria.

The board had discussed the sale with three adjacent property owners – Alexandria Technical and Community College (ATCC), Douglas County Hospital and Knute Nelson.

ATCC had expressed an intention to make an offer, but an agreement couldn’t be reached in such a short period of time. The looming fall referendum date also prevented the hospital from finalizing the purchase of the property at this time.

The board had to seek out other possible buyers with the help of a local realtor. This resulted in two offers – one from an LLC and one from the Smiths, long-time Alexandria residents and both graduates of JHS.

During the closed session, the board opted to accept the Smiths’ offer, as they expressed a desire to keep the property available for a future sale to the hospital or ATCC, while at the same time reducing the cost of a proposed new high school to taxpayers.

“Sally and I have long felt there was a powerful link between building a new high school and the unshackling of our landlocked college and hospital,” said Brent Smith. “When it looked like the timing wasn’t right we became concerned. We did what we did to help ensure that this synergistic advantage wasn’t lost. We hope that given three years’ time to be able to plan and organize, that those entities will end up with the property. That could really be a powerful thing for our community.”

The board is pleased with the amount offered by the Smiths, as the land on which the high school sits is valued at $1.8 million. According to Anderson, none of the potential buyers were interested in the building.

“It is quite clear to us having three, or essentially five, individuals express the position that the building is probably a liability, that it is of no value at all,” he said.

The Smiths’ offer to purchase the property is contingent upon voters passing the referendum this fall.

“If the referendum does not pass, this all goes away,” Anderson said.

According to a press release from the school district, “conveyance of the Jefferson property is contingent upon the successful passage of the Phase II bond referendum and the construction schedule, as the school will remain in use until a new high school is completed.”

On behalf of the school board, Anderson expressed his gratitude to the Smiths for their purchase agreement.

“I want to personally say thank you, thank you, thank you,” he concluded. “This is a tremendously generous offer. It’s quite remarkable and we are fortunate to have you be able to help out for the public good.

“I’ll smile through the rest of the meeting now.”

As you may know, 2011 marks the 120th anniversary of the Echo Press. In celebration, once a month we are running snippets of stories from yesteryear, along with advertisements from the last century. Of course, it’s also graduation time – that bittersweet time of year when melancholy parents have to say goodbye to their children as they set off to start lives of their own. In a tribute to both Echo Press history and to parents with graduating seniors, following is an excerpt from a column written in 1965 by John Obert, city editor and then editor at the Park Region Echo from 1948 to 1966. It was written to his oldest son, Tom, as he set off for college. Tom (aka Cubby) returned to Alexandria, his boyhood home, in 2001 after 30 years working for the U.S. Department of Labor. Although it was written 46 years ago, its message and the feeling it evokes transcends time.

“Dear Tom, When your mother and I said goodbye to you in the dormitory, an era ended, for life will never be quite the same again. Oh yes, you’ll be home for holidays and summer vacations, and your room will always be your room. But you’ve taken that first irrevocable step away from us, as every young man inevitably must, and the parting wrench…well, someday when you’re as old as I am perhaps you’ll understand. As we drove away I turned to your mother and said, “Suddenly I feel very old.”

I kept thinking of the day you were born, suddenly astounded that 18 years had passed so quickly… The years passed all too quickly. I remember your first step, your first word – it was a magnificently profane expression you learned when I came up under the open door of the medicine cabinet one day and cracked my head. People kept telling us to ignore your one word vocabulary and that you’d soon forget it. Hah! You said that same word for two months before you uttered the conventional Ma-Ma and Da-Da…

I remember your first haircut. You leaped from the chair and fled screaming down the street. Shortly after, Grandpa gave me a home barber kit, which you suffered patiently until the crew cut stage was abandoned and you suddenly demanded professional tonsorial attention. I remember your first day at school. You didn’t cry. Mother did.

I remember your first Little League baseball game… It all passed so swiftly. All of a sudden you were in junior high school, and it was a buck and a quarter a week for hot lunch instead of a buck. With your appetite it was cheap at twice the price…

Where did the years go? When your mother and your grandmother and your sister and I watched the graduation processional that hot night last June, bursting with what I’m certain seemed rather tasteless pride when you stood in the first row with the honor students, it seemed but yesterday when we brought you to Washington school for your very first day of kindergarten…

I wish we had more time together this summer. I suppose every father in the world says that when his oldest leaves home. But it does seem something of a shame that a man doesn’t really get to know his sons, doesn’t really get to appreciate them, until they’ve reached young manhood – and are about to leave. Well, now you’re in college and on your own. No one to answer to but yourself. No one to tell you when to be home. No one to remind you to hit the books…

I suppose I should be worried. But I’m not. I really don’t know what we did to make you turn out the decent young man you are. I don’t think we can take much credit for it. But we can take a great deal of comfort and satisfaction – and we do. I suppose, too, that I should wind this up with some fatherly advice. I think it would be redundant at this point. If you haven’t learned decency, courtesy, compassion, honesty and diligence, there’s nothing I can do about it now. But I think you have. And that’s why I’m not worried.

We were waiting for the Tsunami here on Lake Henry, but none developed.
The Echo reports:

An earthquake rattled the Alexandria area early this morning. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a 2.5 magnitude rumbled at 2:20 a.m. Friday. The Echo Press has received a few reports from residents who said they felt it. They described the quake as "loud" and "lasted a couple seconds." An Echo Press staff member, who lives in Alexandria, reported hearing and feeling her bedroom wall rattle briefly. The USGS reports the earthquake hit 39 miles southeast of Fergus Falls and 55 miles northwest of Willmar. Did you feel the quake?

Cathy Bakke's Mom

Frances Bakke
Frances Mathilda Loch was born December 1, 1920 in Bismarck, ND, the daughter of John and Clara (Bauman) Loch. Fran grew up in Alexandria and was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church. She completed her schooling in Alexandria and began working for the North American Creamery.

On June 25, 1937 Fran was united in marriage to Clifford Bakke in Sisseton, SD. The couple made their home on McKay Avenue in Alexandria. They were blessed with six children. She spent much of her time raising her children and providing for her family. At home she kept a large flower garden and also a large vegetable garden. For forty-five years Fran worked as a florist at Anderson Florist in Alexandria. In 1999 Fran and Clifford celebrated their sixty-second wedding anniversary.

Fran was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church. She also belonged to her Birthday club. Fran enjoyed visiting. Whenever someone stopped to visit they were always offered home baked desserts and coffee. In 2007 Fran moved from her home on McKay to live with her son in Alexandria. Later she moved to Clearwater Suites.

On Monday, April 11, 2011 Fran died at the age of ninety years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Bakke; son, Raymond Bakke; grandson, David Bakke; brother, Vernon Loch; and sister, Margaret Bakke. Fran is survived by her children, Duane Bakke and wife, Leta, of Alexandria, Rodney Bakke and wife, Darlene, of Alexandria, Allen Bakke and wife, DiAnn, of Alexandria, Cathy Miller and husband, Dennis of Denver, CO, Richard Bakke and wife, Catherine of East Bethel, MN; twelve grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; and one brother, Leslie Loch and wife, Dorothy of St. Cloud, MN.

A funeral service was held on April 14, 2011 at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Marilee Bergerson and Rev. Denise Croskey officiating. Randy Morken and Karen Gladen provided music. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery in Alexandria. Pallbearers were Fran’s grandchildren, Debra Gibson, Darren Bakke, Brian Bakke, Kevin Bakke, Jodi Holmquist, Scott Bakke, Chris Bakke, Kelly Stamer, Kacie Miller, Chaz Bakke, Cassandra Bakke and Gregory Bennett. Honorary casket bearers included Mike & Susie Merten, Larry Bakke, Diane Rymer, Anita Renstrom, Rev. Denise Croskey, Jennie Trumm, the Members of Fran’s Birthday Club and all of her great and great great grandchildren.

Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.

Here's a bit of radio nostalgia from Karl Tegland, who dug up the survey, above:

When I was in college, a friend and I were really interested in radio. We visited the studios of both WDGY and KDWB. The difference was like night and day.

WDGY was neat, clean, and very businesslike. It was like walking into a neighborhood branch bank. They had a place for everything, and everything was in its place. The DJ worked in a small soundproof cubicle.

KDWB was a mess. It was like walking into the front room at an auto junkyard. Dirty, messy, and totally disorganized. I still remember noticing that the carpeting in the studio was filthy and worn right down to the concrete floor in pathways where people actually walked.

The DJ was plunked down in the middle of a large well-worn room, surrounded by large tables containing records, technical equipment in various states of disassembly, lunch sacks, and piles of unrecognizable junk.

Wisely, KDWB kept its business and advertising offices elsewhere, in the Foshay Tower.

Ruth Alberg, 95

Ruth Magdaline Brenden Alberg, 95, Alexandria, passed away on March 28, 2011. She will be remembered as a loving wife of 42 years to Elmer Alberg, who predeceased her in 1978, and caring mother to her four daughters, Pauline (Charles) Maahs of Overland Park, KS, Karen Alberg, Roseville, Susan (Randall) Wall, Naples, FL, and Jean (Russell) Bey, Arden Hills; six grandchildren, David and Sara (Kaemmer) Maahs, Tiffany (Esquino) and Hunter Johnson, Jefferson and Chandler Bey; as well as 13 great-grandchildren.

Born January 28, 1916 in Starbuck, Ruth was the sixth of 10 children of Anna and John Brenden. She graduated from high school in Starbuck and two years later married Elmer on June 28, 1936. In 1949 they moved to Alexandria, which became their lifelong home and where Ruth raised her family, supported her husband in his concrete business and was involved in First Lutheran Church and community volunteerism.

Ruth was an avid golfer and loved reading, knitting and quilt-piecing. She enjoyed her bridge groups and the friendships that grew from them. She had a lively and quick wit that was evident until the end of her life.

Ruth is survived by two sisters, Helen Good and Lorraine Gordhamer, both of Minneapolis, and Tineke and Marco Von de Graaf, of The Hague, Holland, the exchange student who lived with the Albergs for a year and stayed close throughout Ruth’s lifetime.

The family wishes to thank special friends, Ophelia and Al Moen and Sylvia and Ed Christopherson, for their friendship and kindness as well as the staff of Nelson Gables and Knute Nelson for their excellent care.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 1 at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria with the Rev. John Peshek officiating. Burial was at Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Lutheran Church or Knute Nelson Foundation in Alexandria.

Evelyn Rose Tvrdik, 92, died March 15, 2011.

Evelyn was born November 21, 1918 in Lake Mary Township to Anton and Marie (Sejnost) Brezina. She attended country school in District 74. Following her schooling she worked in the area as a nanny. Evelyn moved to Chicago, where her aunt and uncle lived, and worked for several years in the Chicago area as a housekeeper.

In 1939 Evelyn returned to the Alexandria area. On December 11, 1940 Evelyn was united in marriage to Daniel Tvrdik at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria. The couple made their home on a farm southwest of Alexandria where they farmed for many years.

The couple was blessed with six children.

Evelyn was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary since 1967. She was also a member of the Eagles in Alexandria for several years and belonged to the ZCBJ Lodge in Lake Mary Township.

Evelyn enjoyed sewing in her earlier years and later did crochet work. She was a gardener and grew fruits, vegetables and flowers at the farm. She baked for her family and friends and was known for her kolaches. Evelyn spent time reading. She also enjoyed sports on the television. Evelyn was a big fan of the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Vikings; she knew how baseball and football should be played. Evelyn was proud of her children and their families and enjoyed spending time with them.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Tvrdik; brother, Thomas Brezina; sisters, Rose Hlinsky and Lily Whiteman.

Evelyn is survived by four sons, Dale Tvrdik and wife, Lynn, Loren Tvrdik and wife, Nadine, Leslie Tvrdik, and Norman Tvrdik and wife, Susan; two daughters, Bernice Trousil and husband, Donald, and Ruth Willett and husband, Raymond; grandsons, Frank Trousil and wife, Lori, Matthew Lurken-Tvrdik and wife, Kelly, Andrew Tvrdik, Timothy Tvrdik and Gregory Tvrdik; granddaughters, Laurie Trousil and husband, Alan Plantikow; and Tracie Crouse and husband, Jeff; stepgrandsons, Jason Willett and wife, Cathy, and Ryan Willett and wife, Nichole; 12 great-grandchildren; one half-sister, Adeline Tvrdik; many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Saturday, March 19 at Anderson Funeral Home with Pastor Wayne Erickson officiating. Margaret Kalina and Patrick Kalina provided music. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery. Casket bearers were Frank Trousil, Matt Lurken-Tvrdik, Andy Tvrdik, Tim Tvrdik, Greg Tvrdik, Jeff Crouse and Alan Plantikow. Honorary casket bearers were Laurie Trousil, Lori Trousil, Tracie Crouse and Kelly Lurken-Tvrdik.

A gathering in Arizona. . .

Again this year, former Alexandrians gathered in Arizona for some good old times. Sara Smith Sevey reports:
We had a great time at Ann Tessmer Dobb's home in Paradise Valley in Arizona. As you can see from the photo, Bob Watson, Brian Berglund, Tom Tessmer, Betsy Thomas and I were there. Ann is a wonderful hostess and her home is beautiful. Ann and Tom's uncle, Everett, also joined us which was fun.
Hopefully next time Claudia Johnson, Sandi Penner, Mike Foss, Charlie Stark and others can join us.

The meeting was at Paul's business, SkoFlo, Inc. in Woodinville, Wash., north of Seattle where he provided a tour of the plant and an explanation of what his business was all about.

Terry Lang of Everett, Karl Tegland (Class of '65) of Mill Creek, Judy Peraino of Mt. Vernon, and Dave Erickson of Bellingham met Paul and the five sat down to get reacquainted after 50 years for some, and number of years for others.

The five had a great Italian lunch and spent some time talking about classmates and friends from years ago. It was decided to make this type of meet an ongoing event and hopefully see if any other former Alexandrians live in the Pacific Northwest and can make time to "drop in".

John and James Kloehn's father. . .

Alfred Herman Rudolph Kloehn, 92, died February 4, 2011 at Knute Nelson in Alexandria.

Alfred was born October 16, 1918 in Ida Township to Gustav and Emma (Schramm) Kloehn. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Garfield. He attended school and also assisted in many chores on the family farm.

Alfred enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country for four years, four months and four days during World War II. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge and attained the rank of staff sergeant. When he came back to the United States, he was united in marriage on June 16, 1946 to Delores Wussow at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Leaf Valley. The couple then began their career of farming, which was a lifetime passion of Alfred’s where he enjoyed working with Jersey cows and John Deere tractors.

A man of many talents, Alfred was a member of the Ida Township Board, St. John’s Lutheran Church Council, and a 60-year member of the American Legion Post 87. They farmed near Garfield with four sons for many years and Delores became ill in 1976 and Alfred became her caregiver also. Delores died on April 21, 1994. Alfred continued to farm with his four sons on the farm, which he continued to do until he entered Knute Nelson on January 31, 2011.

Alfred is survived by his four sons James (JoEllen) of Brooklyn Center, John (Shirley Korkowski), David and Douglas (Norma); five grandchildren, Andrea (Nathan) Naef, Ashley (Julia) Kloehn, Laura (Mike) Spoo, Eric and Kyle Kloehn; and two great-grandchildren, Noah Kloehn and Alexander Naef.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Delores; brothers, Herbert, Rudy, Elmer, Robert and Hugo; and sisters, Flora Hupfer, Bertha Stark, Matha Timm and Della Linser.

A funeral service was held February 12 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Garfield with the Rev. Shawn Ethridge officiating. Music was provided by Elaine Beulke. Pallbearers were James Kloehn, John Kloehn, David Kloehn and Douglas Kloehn. Military honors were accorded by American Legion Post 87 (where he was a member for 60 years), Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 936 and the Minnesota National Guard Honors. Interment will be at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Garfield.

Marie Caroline Backhus Nokes, 92, died on Monday, February 7, 2011. Wife of the late Vern Leon Nokes, Marie was born November 14,1918, in Mapleton to Henry and Adele Backhus. She was baptized January 5, 1919 by the Rev. Paul Elsel. She was confirmed November 25, 1934 by the Rev. A.W. Scharfe at St. John Lutheran in Mapleton. After graduating valedictorian of the Mapleton High School class of 1935, she worked for Dr. Graham Howard. She was married to Vern Nokes on February 25, 1940 by the Rev. A.W. Scharfe at St. John Lutheran in Mapleton. Nine children were born to this union. There are 23 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Surviving are her children, daughter, Sharon (Roger) Mailand, Seward NE; sons, Lowell (Lorraine), Alexandria, Gary (Carolyn), Del Rio, TX, Paul, Bellevue, NE, Leslie (Debora), Elbow Lake, Dennis (Kathy), Seguin, TX, Dale, Parkers Prairie, and Keith (Jerlyn), Hayward, CA; grandchildren, Sharon: Michael (Diane) Mailand; Joel (Becca) Mailand; Raymond: Ronald and David Nokes, Tonya McDaniel; Bobbie Youtcheff; Julie and Ray Ogden; Gary: Doug (Jennifer) Nokes; Jerome (Melanie) Nokes; Jason Nokes; Paul: Paul (Jennifer) Nokes Jr.; Ryan Nokes; Leslie: Tina (Mike) Funkhouser, Neil Nokes, Lynn (Jessica) Nokes; Dennis: Amy Nokes Kowalski; Greg Nokes; Bryan McLaughlin, Dawn (Shannon) Standridge; Dale: Stephanie, Joshua (Stacey), and Andrew Nokes; Keith: Charles Nokes; several great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death: by her husband, Vern; son, Raymond and wife, Margie Nokes; her parents, Henry and Adele Backhus; a stillborn sister; daughter-in-law, Jeanne Nokes (Paul); former daughter-in-law, Donna Nokes; nephew, Roy Torgusen; and niece, Sheila Torgusen, nephew, Lauren Harris, and niece RaNee Nokes Barton.

Marie was a Sunday school teacher for many years before and after her marriage, in Mapleton and in Garfield. She served as Sunday school superintendent. She taught weekday school. She was active as a 4-H leader when her children were youngsters. She and her husband, Vern, were active in the Garfield Fire Department, where Marie was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Marie served on the Board of Directors for Lutheran Island Camp, Henning. She was a member of the Douglas County Historical Society. Marie served as Garfield town clerk and Ida Township assessor for many years. She was an honorary member of the Garfield Firemen's Auxiliary, and a member of the Douglas County Historical Society. Marie loved to write poetry. She had a couple of poems printed in the local papers.

Funeral services were held Monday, February 14 at St. John Lutheran Church in Garfield with the Rev. Shawn Ethridge officiating. Nancy Anderson played the organ. Interment was at the church cemetery.

Dear classmates:
Above are pictures of my daughter, Sarah, and friends preparing for the Snow Days dance at Champlin High School.
Sixteen is just too young to be growing up this fast. She is a good student and athlete and plays varsity softball and basketball for Champlin Park.

My youngest son, Matt, attends Moorhead as a freshman and seems to be enjoying. He was just home this weekend and we all watched those hated Packers win the SB..you packer fans are probably celebrating hard right now..it was a good game.

I've been spending this past 10 months enjoying retirement from BAE Systems after 41.5 years. I don't miss my job as much as I expected to and I'm able to see a lot of my work friends yet through golf leagues and tourneys and other parties, so that is good.

Summer was filled with golf and winter months have been filled with going to Sarah's basketball games and coaching some of my friends' younger kids. I really enjoy the Cub Reporter's sports reports periodically, so keep those up, Tom. It would be fun seeing Alex playing Champlin Park sometime.

I have a 4 yr. old grandson Kaleb and a 9 month grand daughter named Stella Rose..its been really fun taking care of them some days and watching them grow up so quickly..they develop their own personalities so young..its fun to watch.

All I can say is that retirement is "underrated" and I would recommend to everyone.

I look forward to playing in the Resorters Golf Tourney again this year.

Lorraine Olson, 92
Lorraine Glennis Olson, 92, Alexandria, died January 28, 2011. Lorraine was born November 9, 1918 in St. John, North Dakota to Charles and Gina (Arneson) Krook. She was the eighth of 11 children.
Lorraine was baptized at Mill Lake Lutheran Church in Menighed, North Dakota on November 16, 1919. Her family moved from North Dakota to the Litchfield and Glenwood area when she was 10. She grew up in Glenwood, attending school and working at Wimpy’s Café and Minton Hotel, where she met her future husband, Raymond “Ray” Olson. Lorraine and Ray were married March 30, 1940 in Glenwood. She was a full-time homemaker, caring for their five children. In 1964, the family moved to Alexandria to operate their family business, Olson Produce.
Lorraine devoted her life to her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was a mom to many with her home and kitchen always open. She loved to cook and sew, with people marveling at her sewing talent. She loved celebrating Halloween, Christmas and Easter.
In the spring you would see Lorraine busy planting vegetables and preparing for her spring and summer flower gardens. She loved shopping and buying for others. She was a Minnesota Twins and golf fan. She loved her game shows. Lorraine could hold her own when others disagreed with her Democratic Party beliefs.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Alexandria and the VFW Auxiliary. She is survived by her children, Sandy (Dennis) Erickson of Brainerd, Charles (Mary) Olson, Glenice (Robert) Vipond, David Olson, all of Alexandria; daughters-in-law, ShuWa Olson and LuWanna (James) Olson; grandchildren, Randy McDonald, Chad Johnson, Cory (Angie) Olson, Stephanie Olson (Neel Bose), Christina (Tam Gregersen) Olson, Jason (Ashley) Anderson, Ryan (Michelle) Vipond, Robert (Shawn) Olson, Shannon (Jackson Berglund) Olson, Jamie (Victoria “Tori” Meyer) Olson, Shawn (Kori Walker) Olson; great-grandchildren, Ashley McDonald, Alexis McDonald, Nathan Johnson, Emma Anderson, Charles Olson, Thomas Olson, Levi Gregersen, Nicholas Vipond, Rebecca Vipond, Gavin Olson, Corbin Olson, Luca Olson, Casey Deleski, Carson Berglund and Aaliyah Olson.

Maritime Garden Project in Minnesota

Here's a press release we were asked to share about what appears to be a nice project for Alexandria:
Alexandria Rotary helps grow Maritime Gardens
The Alexandria Rotary Club recently donated $5,000 to the Maritime Gardens project at the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum. Also, the state chapter of Rotary International matched the local club, donating an additional $5,000 to the project.

Maritime Gardens will be located on two acres of land north of the museum building. The space will feature a lakeside garden with a variety of educational plantings, walking paths, sculptures, picnic shelters, band shelter with seating and viewing benches.

The Gardens will be used for outdoor museum events, but project organizers also hope the beautiful surrounds will be used by people for calm strolls through the gardens, and a bit of solace for visitors to unwind, relax and enjoy the lakeside space.

A portion of Maritime Gardens is expected to open this summer. The park will be completed in 2012.

The Pacific Northwest Chapter of Alexandria ex-pats met for coffee on 5 January 2011 at Starbucks in Marysville, Wash.
Attending were Dave Erickson and Terry Lang from the Class of '63 and Karl Tegland, Class of '65.
Major topic of discussion was "Do you remember...?" Many names were brought up and Dave brought his Annual from 1963 so we could look at some very young people.
The other major topic was "Mrs Daum" and 4th grade at Lincoln. Both Terry and Karl had her as their 4th grade teacher and Terry's wife, Rita, also did.
The meeting was a great success and plans are going forward to have more. Anyone living in the Pacific Northwest is encouraged to get in touch with any of the three mentioned through Terry at terry@terrylang.com.

In the dead of winter 1965, famed conductor/composer William Dawson journeyed north to Alexandria, Minnesota, at the invitation of Jefferson High School Choral Director Murrae Freng, to guest conduct the annual Clinic Concert. Dawson's credentials were impeccable, he'd run the Tuskegee Institute music department for 25 years and developed the choir there into an internationally-known ensemble. His challenge that cold weekend in Minnesota was to teach a bunch of white kids how to sing a spiritual in a traditional format. . . quite unlike anything they'd attempted to date. The music was "Ain't A That Good News" and Mr. Dawson worked tirelessly for two days to get the choir to feel the syncopation in the music. Here's a live recording from the Saturday night concert. To the editor:
I see eye to eye with the people who oppose the construction of a new high school. I am in agreement that a new school will raise the amount of taxes for our community, yet the benefits of this matter will outweigh the financial burden of taxes.
However, it is imperative for this society to improve the education conditions for Alexandria’s youth. At this moment, Jefferson High School is in shambles. The ceilings are filling with asbestos, the stone foundation is crumbling and the intercoms are shorting out.
Both teachers and students agree that the aged hallways are too diminutive for 992 students on a daily basis. One student commented on the situation, “It’s hard for over 900 people to navigate these hallways, and sometimes impossible!” Many of the classrooms are over-crowded with, in some cases, over 30 high school students, not including the teachers and paraprofessionals.
Over the years, the ballot for a new school has been turned down. The longer it takes to pass the referendum, the worse the condition of the school gets. Jefferson is a crumbling crypt, as some students put it. After time, the walls rot away and critters start to creep inside.
Do we want our community to be represented by a lackluster school? It is time for the public to step up and vote “Yes” for the high school referendum. If not for yourself, then vote for the thriving young minds that will run this city someday.

Gambling was illegal at JHS in the 60s, but somehow Karl Tegland was able to run this operation right under the nose of the authorities. See if you can find your name. Ken Dyrstad won it. What's interesting about the game is that there are 100 squares, so Tegland collected $5 --- but only paid out $2.50. Now that's a vig. So now we know how he bought gas for his car. Last night's old-timers pre-Thanksgiving gathering at the Sixth Ave Wine and Ale prompted an announcement. Organizer Taryn Nelson Flolid of the Class of 1974 is related to our Tom Kiehne. This morning our Cub Reporter Tom Obert, with a teeny hangover, reported in:
Tom writes:

Taryn Nelson Flolid, class of '74, greeted Professor Doctor Colonel Tom Kiehne, class of '65, at SAWA. It turns out both are avocational genealogists and were aware they are related to each other. Taryn's husband, Chuck, is also related to Doctor Kiehne, though he is not related to Taryn except through direct marriage.

This raises two issues: 1) There is a mini-Stearns County syndrome going on in Douglas County; 2) I took anthropology and at one time had at least a working understanding of the Eskimo kinship system - I had no idea what these two were talking about!

The Obert family tree was never traced any further back than Orange Obert, who deserted during the Civil War to return home to Iowa to get the crops in. Happy Thanksgiving!

Watson relapses, banned from Omaha Target

Many members of the Class of 1965 remember their classmate Bob Watson as a mischievous prankster, if not a downright hell-raiser. But after serving as chairman of this summer's successful class reunion, many were also impressed by his maturity, responsibility and competence. That's why it is so hard for them to make sense of this recent development:

Since retiring, Bob's dear wife has insisted that Bob accompany her while she shops their Omaha Target. Unfortunately, like most men, Bob finds shopping boring and prefers just getting in and out of stores. Equally unfortunate, his wife is like most women, and she loves to browse.

Last week, Bob's dear wife received the following letter from their local Target management:

Dear Mrs. Watson,
Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to ban both of you from the store. Our complaints against your husband, Mr. Watson, are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras.

1. June 15: Took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people's carts when they weren't looking.

2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals.

3. July 7: He made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the women's restroom.

4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, 'Code 3 in Housewares.. Get on it right away'. This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time and costing the company money.

5. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway.

6. August 14: Moved a 'CAUTION - WET FLOOR' sign to a carpeted area.

7. August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers he'd invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department to which twenty children obliged.

8. August 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him he began crying and screamed, 'Why can't you people just leave me alone?' EMTs were called.

9. September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose.

10. September 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were.

11. October 3: Darted around the store suspiciously while loudly humming the 'Mission Impossible' theme.

Two former Alexandrians met up for the first time in over 50 years for coffee today and spent time discussing Alex and what's happened to "Do you remember?".

Terry and Karl at today's luncheon

Karl Tegland and Terry Lang both live in the Everett, WA area about 1 mile from each other and until Stan Rolfsrud and Tom Obert pointed in the right direction, Karl and Terry did not know they lived that close to each other. They even shop at the same grocery store!

Karl has lived in the Seattle area since 1969 and has a law office in Mill Creek which is about 20 miles north of Alexandria. He is married to the former Sue Gorham and they live just north of Mill Creek in an area known as Silver Lake. Terry, who retired from the US Navy in 1993, settled in Everett because family lived in the Puget Sound area. Terry is married to the former Rita Robinson and their home is about one mile west of the Teglands.

Through email, Karl and Terry were able to get together for the first time in over 50 years and are now planning more mini-reunions. And, if there are any former Alexandrians who live in the Seattle/Everett area, let them know.

Terry last visited Alexandria in 2007 for one night and before that, he was in town with a Navy Polaris missile in the summer of 1967. He was going from one show in Kentucky to another show in Mitchell, SD and decided Alex was a convenient stop! He was listening to KXRA and heard MR. Aga over the air waves early in the morning, so he stopped at the radio station and spent some time with Mr. Aga and his radio audience. Terry remembers going up to Central to talk to Mr. Frank who had been his 9th Grade Science teacher and was the one who got him interested in photography (Terry spent 30 years as a US Navy photographer and now has his own photo business and teaches photography at community colleges) with a Kodak Brownie and his dark room at the school.

Karl arrived for the lunch with a little Nikon point-and-shoot camera -- proud that he had figured out how to use it. Terry arrived with a pro-level camara system about the size of the Space Shuttle.We quickly decided that the pro should take the photo!
So I understand, Larry pulls up behind KXRA early in the morning pulling a Polaris Missle with a official Navy truck. Good thing Jerry Ven Kempen was out of town. He would have showed up within 4 minutes, to sell tickets for kids to climb on the Missle!!

Stan, I went to your class blog and saw where you had put in info about Central's gym and my dad and his broadcasting woes. His sidekick was HH (Herb Robinson) who had the credit bureau in town. The family lived in Victoria Heights across from the Oberts and Seims and next to the Sherrys. I married Rita, Herb's oldest daughter.

When I was in grade school at Lincoln, we played an annual game at Central against Washington. I remember we did it each year, 4th, 5th, and 6th. I remember we all thought it was the greatest, most important basketball game to ever be played because we grade schoolers were getting to play in the high school gym! At that age, the gym seemed enormous! Years before the movie "Hoosiers", one of our coaches showed us that the rims were the same height as the ones we used at Lincoln.

I also remember Dad broadcasting a game between the Minneapolis Lakers and the faculty. That game was played at the new Jefferson Senior High Gym, but I don't remember if it was for some fund-raiser or not.

Stan says: Yep. That was his set-up all right. Except one detail. Ray was elevated. The Central High basketball floor was so tiny the black out-of-bounds line was just six inches from the front of the stage wall. Visitors called the gym a "crackerbox." There wasn't enough room out of bounds to stand in a pair of sneakers, so a red dotted line was used for taking the ball out after a goal was scored. Since there was no room for broadcasting from the floor, (there was barely space for team benches -- the scorer's table was above them in the bleachers) Ray broadcast from his little table at the very edge of the court, but actually ON the stage, in the corner right in front of the packed roll-out stage bleachers, where the band played, and slightly behind and to the west of the basketball goal.

Now, who was his broadcasting sidekick? (It wasn't Bob.)

Got a note from Jessica Critz who is working for the Alexandria School District in an ambitious attempt to collect and maintain a data base of all public school alumni. We told her that was impossible. She asked if we would send her the Class of 1965 data, but we declined because we explained that we had told our class members that we wouldn't be sharing their addresses if they sent them in to us. We said we would be happy to post her request and encourage everyone to, by all means, get on this data base.

It was fun to see the program of our confirmation. Don't really remember much of the service, just all the classes beforehand! I remember that it was cold, windy and icy that day, and we had to pose for pictures outside for my relatives. I recall black & white photos of me standing with Pat Collins, Betsy Thomas and Carol Navratil, on the steps, freezing! Don't know where Jane, Ellen and Marta were. I could only find ones of me but can picture the other gals clearly.

I went thru boxes and boxes and no luck finding them. None of the boys either. I also don't remember any "formal" photos! In color! Can't compete with the Lutherans! I remember that my gramma made my dress and we girls all had to wear white dresses, black flats (of course!), and little "doilies" on our head. Not quite as fancy as the Catholic's First Communion! We were 13 and at that awkward age and I felt stupid with the doilie, held in place with bobby pins.

I remember Rev. Henry Hoover quite fondly.

I think I was about 10 when he came to Emmanuel Episcopal. He was a lot of fun and was a big hit with the kids. I remember the lion hunts, stomping through quicksand, crawling through tall grass, etc. He'd always have funny sermons that weren't over our heads. It seemed they were more for us than the adults. Everyone loved him. He had quite a library and he let me borrow books regularly as he knew I loved to read. My favorites were Dr. Doolittle, and The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe, which I also remember from vacation Bible school as we would sit in the grass and read parts of it, and try to act some of it out. Always wondered how that had a place in Bible school!

Well, if my religious studies were lacking, I also attended the Vacation Bible Schools at Zion Lutheran and First Methodist, with neighbor kids. Mom was always glad to get us out of the house. Rev. Hoover eventually moved to another parish, and Rev. Beresford came from Canada to take his place.

Years later, when I was working as a pediatric nurse at North Memorial Hospital, I was taking someone down to Xray or something, and there was Rev. Hoover on the elevator! I was 23 and had recently come back from maternity leave after Krista was born. I was very surprised to see him, and my folks were delighted to hear that I had run into him. We decided that we would like to have Rev. Hoover do Krista's baptism, so my folks and all the relatives came from Alex to his church in Roseville (St. Christopher's Episcopal Church).

That was quite memorable and quite an honor. I did a google search on him, and he is still there! His name was on a summer 2010 newsletter. He is Rector Emeritus now. Wonder if he is still doing lion hunts....

the phone bill from May 1947 which showed a long distance call a day before I was born to my Grandmother's house for a total of 31 cents -- obviously to let them know the birth was imminent and that she should come to stay with LuAnn and Duane (the long distance calls are handwritten on the back of the bill);
a column written by Judy Blanchard when I was running for the nomination for Congress;
a 1939 calendar with handwritten notes by my dad;
a 1947 calendar -- both are from Lowry State Bank -- this one with numbers on each day for the number of eggs that were gathered and a notation that my mother washed the car on May 5 (I was born on the 7th);
my dad's diploma from 1924 signed by Julia D. Solverud-Knutson, Pope County Superintendant (didn't know they were hyphenating names back then, obviously an enlightened woman)
a pamphlet entitled "Farmers in 1944",
The Lake Region Echo from November 10, 1972 with all of the election results [available on request];
negatives from my parent's 50th anniversary celebration;
a Washington Post from the day after Ford pardoned Nixon wih yours truly pictured as having been one of the first at the White House to protest;
and attached, the program for the baccalaureate for the Class of 65.
BUT SO FAR -- NO CATHOLIC CONFIRMATION PHOTO.
(I was counting on Bev Roers, but she says she doesn't have it.

Thanks. And was glad I could provide a missing artifact from Karl's youth. The Obert children were all baptized together . . . just in case. My Dad had one time considered the seminary.
A remembrance from that Sunday was that I was wearing a brand new red blazer and the bishop threw water all over it (probably the baptism?)! And others may also recall our reverend, Henry Hoover - during Sunday school he would take us on "lion hunts," which I recall were great fun.

We also observe that, in a model of economy, four Oberts were presented for Holy Baptism on the very same program. Indeed, a big day in 1960 with the Bishop Hamilton Kellogg presiding, and a special discretionary offering for him. But no film.

Homecoming parade made easier this year

This year's homecoming parade is Oct. 2, 2010. If you are a walker, you don't have to register. Last year the class of '65 had two (2) walkers.....I believe it was Obert & Drexler. (Yes, that's the dynamic duo below) Class of '67 had six. Class of '68 had eight.
We found out last year that the walk from the fairgrounds was a little hike in itself, so this year I have roped my husband (non-alum) to drive his restored 1976 Silverado pickup in the parade, that way several of us can ride in the back on the way to Broadway. We had a banner made for the grill that just says JHS Alumni.
In the pickup box will also be two members from the class of '41. Alan Grundei usually drives ahead of us with his mother's class in his '57 chevy.
We usually have a great time and Broadway is packed. The shirts are red, with the class year on them. ($5) Can't beat that with a stick!

Thought I’d drop you a line after seeing Lorlee’s blog entry…..I spent a couple hours the other night on the computer and am happy to say that I’ve added 68 new ‘found’ classmates to the list and know that I can add probably another 10-15, before I’ve exhausted my resources.

Maybe once I’m done with my search process, we could pull those remaining ‘unfound’ names out and post them on the blog. The ones that are impossible to find, unless someone knows them, are many of the guys who have more common last names, such as Anderson, Johnson, etc.

Little did I realize 40-45 years ago that when I wrote the names of the men that many of the gals married in my yearbook, it would make a search process much easier!! Who knew???

On a personal note -- Today I shipped off my photos to the University of Minnesota, Morris for hanging in the new Welcome Center. I answered the "Call for Artists" and was pleased to be selected. The opening ceremony is Sept. 26 -- so if anyone is in the vicinity of UMM after that time, stop at the Welcome Center and see my photos.

To Stan and the bunch who hosted this Reunion,

I am so glad my kids talked me into going to the Reunion. It was such a great time! I love seeing all the pictures and can reminisce all over again.

I definitely plan to go back in five years; maybe then I will be retired so I can stay for more than the weekend.

Thanks!!!!!! Scott and I both had a great time. Sorry it took us 38 years to make it to another reunion. A special thanks to Betty for opening up her house on Friday. She has a great place and what a great day for a pontoon ride.

Here's Sara [Smith] Sevey, her husband, Jim (bookending Ruthie Obert), here from Los Altos, California, and Al (class of '67) and Kathy Grundei. That's Tom Obert in the front, source of this information, an unapologetic party-goer in his own right.

Paul Strandberg, Karl Tegland, Ron Olson.

Karl Tegland and Stan Rolfsrud brought news of the JHS Class of 1965 reunion this morning to two classmates who were unable to attend. The impromptu meeting with Ronnie Olson (class vice president) and Paul Strandberg (class president) took place on a beautiful morning under an umbrella in Strandberg's sunny Roseville back yard.
Earlier on, Tegland, Rolfsrud and Strandberg ate a hearty breakfast at the nearby Byerly's. The trio enjoyed three-egg omelets, filled with wild rice sausage, mushrooms and cheeses (swiss and buttered toast for Tegland and Strandberg, cheddar and English muffins for Rolfsrud). Pushing the gourmet envelope further, Tegland added chopped green peppers to his mix, and ordered a round of coffee, black. It was agreed that the senior menu, although attractively priced, appeared way too lightweight for any serious consideration.
After breakfast, Rev. Olson showed up at Paul's house to visit before leaving with Paul for their regular noon Fantasy Baseball meeting (they've had a bad year, drafted poorly and are now paying for it. They have been at this for 38 years. You would think that by now. . .).
Olson and Strandberg were most interested in hearing all about the good folks at the reunion events; yes, they do read the class blog, but there's nothing like getting the personal dish.
Rolfsrud and Tegland served generous helpings.
