So now we remember the words. .. .

Here are the complete words to the Alex rouser, thanks to Mary Berglin and her sister.
Sara Sevey

----------------------------
Mary Berglin writes:
Here you go. Sara . I can't say I did this without a little help - I had most of it - but had to call my sister Kathy who was also a cheerleader - and Ginny Backlund to put all the pieces together:

Cheer oh cheer for Alex.
Shout till the rafters ring.
We are gonna yell oh yell for our team.
Alexandria, rah, rah, rah!
Never give up hopes, boys, fight until we win.
Always looking onward, doing the best we can.
We can beat old Glenwood
As we done before.
And we can help our team by yelling
Alexandria, rah, rah, rah!
Fight for dear old Alex and we'll win this game,
And we will carry on forever dear old Alex's name.

What? Peony envy?

Mine is the biggest!
says Diane Hoffman O'Brien.

Peony envy

I'm so jealous of all those gorgeous peonies! I had two plants produce one flower each this year and felt extremely accomplished until I saw these.
Also I saw the picture in the right hand corner and my first thought was that it was David Berg? Did we have a David Berg or am I out in left field again?
I wrote to Bobby Johnson's sister, Karen, who graduated with my sister in '57, asking if she remembered the words to the cheer song and haven't heard back but will let you know if I do.
Sara Sevey

Trailboss Says:
Thanks for the note, Sara. Yup, that's David alright. (And that's YOU on the left!) The pix comes from the Betty Larson black and white collection, I think. They will be making an appearance in a black and white rock and roll video we are presently working up, along with any others that people care to send. Diane? KB?
Who's got 60s era snaps that they can shoot with a digital camera and email to the trailboss? Don't worry about quality. Everything was a blur back then. Ha. Beresford just sent a couple. Still waiting on the Osterberg entries. trailboss@swpub.com

For those of us with dial-up

Please include a still photo occasionally of the movies you are posting.
Thanks.
Lorlee

You got it, Lorlee. Sorry. The backlit red one is really nice, but below is a special pink and white for you. I think it's my favorite.

Do you like peonies?

These peonies have thrived for 80 years about two miles from Diane O'Brien's home in Eden Prairie, on the J.R. Cummins park site, just across from the Flying Cloud Airport. Cameo by the trailboss and Mrs. trailboss. Three minutes.

Final Word on School Song, Vol. I

KXRA talking host Patty Wicken (above) stirred controversy some time ago about the origins of the Alexandria Fight Song (Cheer Oh Cheer For Alex, Shout 'til the Rafters Ring, remember?). It is a raging controversy that our John Herdan rightly will not allow to rest. Here is new info on the school song summarized by our class music archivist and rushed to grateful readers here.

Dear Stan,
Here is some definitive information on the Jefferson Senior High School school song.

A copy of the piano/conductor's score was forwarded to me by Larry Clark of Carl Fischer, Inc. music publishers in New York. Larry is redoing all of the original Bennett Band Book music and recently finished Volume One. "College Boy", the Alexandria school song will be re-released in Volume Two some time next year. This is a copy of the score as it was originally released. It is a two line condensed version with only a few words identifying instrumentation. Only the trio of the march is used for the school song. It clearly identifies the "Rah, rah, rah" part which was to be shouted.

According to information on the first page it was published in 1926 and lists Harold Bennett as the composer. Other information on the page identifies it as being published by "The Fillmore Bros. Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio." Harold Bennett was a pseudonym used by Henry Fillmore on the whole Bennett Book series which Fillmore wrote. James Henry Fillmore, Jr. lived from 1881 to 1956. After graduating from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in 1901 he gained fame as a circus bandmaster. He returned to Cincinnati to direct The Shriners Temple Band. He is known as the "Father Of The Trombone Smear." In 1938 he retired to Florida but remained active in band music. The rehearsal hall at the University of Miami in known as "The Henry Fillmore Band Hall."

This conductor's score may be used as a piano part. If anyone needs a copy for a class reunion or for their own entertainment they can send a request for my e-mail to Stan.

That should just about cover it until Volume Two is published.

John

Trailboss sez: You can click on the music sample --above, right-- to enlarge it enough to play for all your friends on your home upright Steinway. To immerse yourself in the history of this controversy further, you're invited to use the Roundup search feature, above. Type in "College Boy" -- be sure to use the quotes. You'll come up with this:

September 29, 2006

Tom Obert started it.

He writes: Big controversy today on KXRA's "Open Line" over who wrote the school song and when (it is unique, most high schools just adopt the tune of a major college). There's was one who said it was Bill Anderson in 1933 - another said it was another chap in the early 40's. Anyone else care to hazard a guess?

Does anybody know the actual words?

John Herdan writes:

Stan,

Sorry, but the school song is not an original. The music to the school song is actually an old march called "College Boy." I believe it came from the "Bennett Band Book" series which means it was actually written by Henry Fillmore. When the words were added, I don't know. But.... most of them go like this:

(1st verse)

Cheer oh Cheer for Alex
Shout till the rafters ring
We're gonna yell oh yell for our team
Alexandria, rah, rah, rah!

(These two lines of the first verse is what I have trouble remembering. Any help here????)

Always looking onward
Doing the best we can

(2nd verse)

We can beat old Glenwood,
As we've done before
And we can help our team by yelling
Alexandria, rah, rah, rah!
Never give up hope, boys
And we'll win this game
And we will carry on forever
Dear old Alex' name.

I'll try and pin a date on it when I get back to the school music library. Further research has proved that it was indeed written by Harold Bennett (Henry Fillmore) and published by Carl Fischer, LLC. However, it is permanently out of print and no further information is available..... so far!I will continue to search.

John

Trailboss sez:

Actually, John, they don't seem to sing "boys" anymore. According to the official notes provided by the cub reporter it is now "team." Readers should note that Alexandria's Fillmore Avenue was not named after the musician, but it now appears that it should have been.

Millard Fillmore was the thirteenth president of the United States. He is most noted for signing the Fugitive Slave Act into law. This made it legal for southerners to retrieve slaves fleeing north.

Alexandria named a street in his honor.

Perhaps, since Millard Fillmore did much less for Alexandria than Henry Fillmore, who wrote the Cardinal Rouser, the city should consider renaming the street after Henry.

K.B. checks in from Everette, WA

Stan,

I just wanted to say what a wonderful job you did on your video, regarding the Jefferson High blog. I'm sure somebody has already said this, but you reminded me of the late Charles Kuralt. You could have a future in television if you wanted it!
I am sorry to hear that the blog may be slowing down, but please try to keep it going if you can. Sue and I check in frequently -- it is our link to Alexandria.
Sue and I are still plugging away here in Everett, Washington. We live on a lake at the south edge of the city, and it reminds us a bit of Minnesota. Very nice. We certainly appreciated your coverage of my mother's death in December, and I received some nice e-mails as a result of it.
I'm starting my 30th year as a legal author for West Publishing, headquartered in Eagan, Minnesota. The parent company (Thomson) just bought Reuters News, and it's still trying to figure out what to call our legal end of the business. Maybe it will remain as West, maybe not. Whatever they decide to call it, I'm planning to stay there a few more years.
Thanks again for all you have done for the blog.

Karl Tegland

(Trailboss says: Thanks for the kind words, Karl, and thanks so much for the post. And a photo too. That's the spirit! The blog will continue just as long as the personal stuff like what you just wrote comes in. That's the topic that really has value and what folks care about. I am happy to simply post all that kind of material, or even edit it if requested to do so, and will until it doesn't come anymore. Who's next? Trust me, we're not here to embarass people. trailboss@swpub.com)

Herdan ensemble to perform in Alex

John Herdan writes:

My select jazz ensemble, Jazz.Combo, is moving to the big time. This year we are bypassing Osakis and actually performing in Beautiful Downtown Alexandria. We have been invited to be a part of "Time Capsule Day" by performing two concerts on Tuesday, June 24, on the Douglas County Courthouse lawn.

Music fans can also look forward to seeing several area musicians joining us on the stage, including the incredible Bill Riggs (photo at right). Several other local musicians about our age have not confirmed yet, but you will know their names when they do. The whole day should be lots of fun. We hope the locals will add this to their summer social schedule.

John will be taking pictures.

Wow! You'll love this from Deanna Osterberg

Hi …
I was given the link to your site by my cousin, Pat Osterberg. And what to my wondering eyes comes up first is a picture of Murrae Freng!
I was in the Alexandria High School Class of 1956 --(Oh, that’s so hard to say) – and took part in the choir under Murrae’s direction. Do you, or does anyone, have Murrae’s address? I lost contact after he left Alex and moved to the Minneapolis area. I would love to contact him once again (as would my brother, Bill Osterberg, who now lives in Chaska).
What a great job you’re doing keeping classmates informed. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the various postings and seeing the photographs (even though I know very few of the people).
Some of the photographs were really spectacular (i.e., Split Rock, and the various winter scenes). Makes me homesick! I wish we had a similar blog for the 1950’s classmates. Thank you for giving your time, expertise, and energy to this wonderful endeavor.
Best regards to you and yours!

Great to hear from you, Deanna!
We await information and photos about Osterberg’s Café that have been promised to us by your cousin. All of the Class of 1965 (and so many others) have huge emotional attachments to Osterbergs, of course. So when our blog finally gets around to posting old photos and info of Osterbergs, we will get a wonderful response from many Osterberg habitués.
So please encourage Mr. O to get his homework done. He says he’s busy with other things, of course, but pictures and memories sent to the trailboss@swpub.com will yield an instant grateful response from many, many old Osterberg customers and friends.
I do not have Murrae’s email address, but if you would permit me to publickly post your lovely note to me, I am sure you’ll get exactly the response you want.
Stan (trailboss@swpub.com)
P.S. Deanna. Wow. Class of 1956 and internet-savvy? You’re something special, no doubt about it! I have been the publisher of the Chaska Herald for the past 30 years. Ask Bill if he reads it much.

Hi Stan …
Thanks for your quick response.
I will get after Pat, and will check my files as well. We were all so fortunate to grow up when and where we did. I refer to our time as the last generation of innocence. In our most extreme imaginations we could not have dreamed up the latter 1960’s, the 1970’s and 80’s – up to today.

Our restaurant was very special indeed, again a matter of timing. My work ethic was formed in that café, and to this day, when I am dining, I still remember Dad saying, “Never use up booth space that could be used for our customers”!
I’m very aware of taking too much time, lowering the ability of the management to “turn over” the tables! Silly things we remember. I also never got to see the ending of football and basketball games as I’d have to rush back to the restaurant to work, getting ready for the onslaught of kids and, eventually the team, filling our space from floor to ceiling (remember the balcony???).

One little bit of history: are you aware that the members of the team were allowed to order a hamburger, French fries, and a drink – sign the check – and we would bill the school?! Can you imagine that happening today?

By all means, post away my note – I’ll look forward to the response.

As for computer literacy – I’ve grown along with the computer industry via my work and my son (my computer guru). Way too much of my time is spent at the keyboard!

I will ask Bill about the Herald – if he hasn’t read it, he should! I believe in supporting local newspapers. I live in California, actually on an island just off of Oakland, across from San Francisco. Alameda has become my Alexandria – it has the small town atmosphere, etc. and I love living here. But a part of me will always miss “home” and the four distinct seasons.

By the way – I looked up the source of the Split Rock picture with the moon, and it is in the collection of Dennis O’Hara at http://www.northernimages.com/. Looking over his website makes me want to visit the Duluth area the next time I’m in MN.

- Deanna

Trailboss says: As a member of the 1963-65 varsity basketball team, I have absolutely no recollection whatsoever of getting any free hamburgers or french fries from Osterbergs or the school district! Times had already changed! However, Deanna, I have no doubt as to your stories and hope to hear more from you and eventually your cousin! Your memories are true Alexandria treasures.

Murrae's Muskie

From the Star Tribune
Murrae Freng, left, and son, Al with a 44-inch muskie Murrae caught on Lake Minnetonka recently while crappie fishing. The muskie hit a 10-inch bass that Freng was reeling in. He landed and released both. The bass survived the ordeal.

Murrae Freng was the Jefferson High School Choral Director during the 1960s. He later headed the Minnesota State High School League.
