The Chairman and the Principal, reunited

Wayne Elton was 27 years old when he became principal of Jefferson High School in 1964. One of his first responsibilities was Bobby Watson. Saturday night Mr. Elton attended the 45th Reunion of the Class of 1965, chaired by Mr. Watson. The two greeted each other warmly. They had, after all, spent significant quality time together in his office.
Later on Saturday night, while he formally welcomed the class to their reunion, Watson told this story:
"Some time ago, I told my daughter Melissa to take my high school diploma and ask Mr. Elton if he would sign it for fifty dollars.
"So she did.
"Mr. Elton said to her, 'Sign whose diploma? Bobby Watson's? Not for fifty dollars!'"
