Bully, bully, bully

The Sevey Open, held the past three years at the Geneva Golf Club, is on hiatus this year as the Seveys go to China for some games or something or other that is going on in that country.
In the absence of this summer outing, Stan Rolfsrud joined his brothers for a tour of the links in North Dakota. They hit the Hawk Tree in Bismarck, the Bully Pulpit in Medora and the Links of North Dakota, east of Williston.
Here's a video of No. 15, the signature hole at the Bully Pulpit in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, where Stan had a shot at a birdie while two other Jeff Hi graduates were witnesses.

Telethon raises $20,000, Herdan reports

Stan,

Just an update on Carolyn's request that people support the Taylor Strand telethon. Lot's of people did and they raised over $20,000 in 12 hours. My brother Mark is the mayor of Sauk Rapids and has two daughters that are friends of Taylor's. He and the co-hosts of the telethon volunteered to have their heads shaved if they met their goal which they did with one minute to go so I now have a bald brother. We have gotten to know Taylor's mom Julie. She and her sister Jaime are the most incredible support system anybody could ever hope for. Thanks to Carolyn for getting the story out.

From Carolyn Hoffland

Hi.
Today our thoughts our with Taylor Strand (age 13), a friend, classmate of our grandson, Joshua, from Sauk Rapids, Minnesota.
On April 5th, she was severely burned from pouring gas on a pit fire. She was immediately rushed to the Hennepin Burn center in Minneapolis with burns over 70% of her body.
She has had several surgeries, and remains in critical condition. Her Mom and Dad are divorced, she has two sisters.
Her Mom has lost her job, her home, and now lives permanently in the Ronald McDonald house in Minneapolis. Her father works enough hours to at least keep their medical insurance. Her two sisters have moved to Monticello to live with their dad and family. They anticipate Taylor could be in the hospital for one year.
Today friends and teachers have set up a 12 hour telethon/fundraiser to help the family with their medical bills. I would just like for you to take the time to at least read her sites. This family needs our help and prayers. Thank you for taking the time to read my message.
We know what support is all about and we want to pass on the need and request.

Nolan

Stan,
Our daughter, Missy (Nolan's Annie) has written in Nolan's blog today, an up-date, as Nolan is having major eye surgery today. As as result to our visit to Boston to see the uveitis specialist, there is a new medical plan recommended. He will have this major eye surgery today (his left eye, good eye) followed by chemotherapy for two years to hopefully put his disease in full remission or cure his disease.
He will be able to have all his treatment here in Albuquerque, and Dr. Foster in Boston assured us that Nolan has been under excellent care here, which was really a relief to know. Not only medically will this be a challenge for Nolan and our family, but this will financially also be a struggle for the family.
In his medical circle he now has three doctors caring for him. Also, he will have to have have blood work every 4-6 weeks to monitor his liver etc. Thanks to all you have supported Nolan and our family.....Nolan continues to need all your prayers and support. This is a long road ahead of him, but we are determined to fight this disease right along with him.

We were 10 when they buried it

Nancy Larson, '65, and her mother were among those attending Alexandria's opening of the 1958 time capsule. Nancy lives in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Nancy Larson
made it,

. . so did Knute

(John Herdan attended the opening of the 1958 Alexandria Time capsule Sunday. His band jazz band played for it. He got some photos and filed this report but was a bit disappointed to see that only one member of our class made it. Oh well. Here's his report anyway:)

--------

Beautiful weather greeted Alexandrians on time capsule day 2008. Entertainment included Dr. Terry Kennedy on guitar, the Runestone Rockettes (you had to be a woman over 60 but I didn't see anybody we would know), the Theater Le Homme Dieu Children's Theater (directed by a former student of mine, Jay Terry), and Senator Knute Nelson. The senator looked pretty good for 165 years old.

Only one member of the class of '65 showed up, Nancy Larson who was home visiting from Ann Arbor, Michigan. Her mom joined her at the afternoon concert. A third generation Kolstad did the sound for us. Twenty-year-old Kent, a student at Concordia College, has his own DJ business. Grandpa Bud and Dad Kurt did show up briefly for the opening of the time capsule but I was at the lake with the band at the time.

The incredible radio voice of KXRA radio Steve Sherwin and his lovely wife Joanne also attended the afternoon concert. (Remember Steve? He was playing tunes during the night shift in the 60s. TB)

The only regular blogger to attend was Patty Wicken who was spotted with her husband, Roy, chatting with Pat and Stephanie Osterberg. Steph was one of the featured performers with the band along with Bill Riggs (accompanied by Anne), Paul "Doc" Engebretson, and Chuck Wencl.

I personally was disappointed to discover that the 1958 time capsule must have been assembled by a left brained person. It was very neatly organized and was filled with 99.44% paper. There were very few artifacts, only a few centennial buttons and a couple of wooden nickles. Even I still have some of those. Other people must have been disappointed too because the contents were just sitting in a pile and no one was paying any attention to them. All in all, a fun day.
